Steamroller
Feb 24th, 2010
I often here people say things that miss the point of Holy Scripture. One of those is, "God won't give you more than you can bear." Then the person usually says something like. "No more Lord! I have enough on my plate! I can't take one more thing! I can't handle one more problem in my life right now!" But you know what? This sinful world is like a steamroller. It doesn't ask you if you have had enough and would like to give up. It doesn't say, "I'll be merciful! They look like they have had enough." It just gets you in its sights and runs you over! We live in a dying world and bad things happen over and over and over to the so called good people. We are all sinners and as sinners bad stuff is what we can expect. Now I enjoy life and I'm not a "downer" kind of guy, but I am realistic and understand sin and this world of tears. The passage I'm thinking about is 1 Corinthians 10:13 "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." This passage is not about, "Lord don't give me any more!" It's about the Lord lifting you up as more comes your way.
Dear friends, at the beginning of 1 Corinthians 10 there is talk about the children of Israel crossing the sea with Moses, a baptism in the cloud and sea as they escaped from bondage. Also how in the desert they all ate the bread from heaven -spiritual food, and drank water from the rock. And the Rock St. Paul tells us was Christ. These are sacramental pictures of the Baptism and the Lord's Supper. We cross through the waters of life and death in Baptism. We eat the bread from heaven in the Lord's Supper. And the Rock, Jesus Christ, who poured out his life blood for us at the cross now gives us that sweet victory over the world, sin, death and devil in the cup of suffering in the Supper. Here is where the Lord is faithful and lifting us up as we face the steamroller of life! Here is where the Lord provides the escape. Here is strengthening for your souls so that you may endure whatever comes your way!
